 Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health. This can then lead to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. The official body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between 25 and 30, and obese when it is greater than 30.

Obesity isn’t just about how you look

The thing is, when you’re overweight or obese, it’s not just about how you fit into your clothes; it’s about your health as well. If you reduce your weight, you will reduce the risk of both physical health problems and mental health problems. For many people, if they look good, not only do they feel good about themselves but they are also likely to feel healthier.

There are health risks associated with obesity

Evidence suggests that serious health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis certain cancers, gout, and strokes (plus many other conditions), are more likely to develop if you carry too much weight. But that’s not all there is to it. Being obese can also affect your sleep patterns by causing your breathing to be interrupted (sleep apnoea), which in turn can affect your health and wellbeing too.

Simply by losing weight steadily (no fad diets!) you will reduce the risk of health problems. And yes, it does take a certain mind-set to be able to achieve this, but the improvement to your self-esteem and health makes it really worthwhile.

What can you do about being obese?

In its simplest terms, being obese and overweight usually results from an individual consuming too much sugar and starch. This causes a hormone imbalance and enables you to store fat.  Of course, unfortunately this is commonplace in today’s society, because the abundance of cheap, sugary, starchy foods, goes in tandem with our occupation and leisure times becoming increasingly sedentary.

Many people have suggested that this inability to maintain and sustain a healthy weight in the 21st century is due to the way in which the human body adapted to survive a hunter gatherer existence. During evolution, humans faced periods of intermittent food shortages, and had to actively hunt for food. In these times, individuals who were most likely to survive were those who deposited fat reserves during times when food was plenty, to act as an energy reserve when food was scarce. Therefore, humans evolved to be able to store fat. In today’s society in Europe and North America, for example, it appears that such an adaptation is actually detrimental, as food is rarely, if ever, scarce these days and storing fat leads to the development of obesity.
